Road Trip Ready: Your Summer Vehicle Gut-Check

Road Trip Ready: Your Summer Vehicle Gut-Check

When summer hits, the open road starts whisperin’ your name—and if you’re like most gearheads I know, you’re already itchin’ to crank the engine, roll the windows down, and let the dust fly. But before you toss the cooler in the back and blast “Free Bird” on repeat, let’s make sure your rig’s not gonna die halfway to the lake.

Here’s your no-BS, wrench-in-hand, get-it-done checklist for makin’ sure your vehicle’s as road-ready as  you are:

1. Fluids

Your truck ain’t a camel. Check your oil, coolant, brake fluid, and washer juice. If it’s lookin’ like chocolate milk or smells like burnt toast, change it. And if you don’t know where your power steering reservoir is...well, we’ll keep that between us.

2. Tires

Check for bald spots, cracks, or wear that looks like your cousin tried drifting it through a gravel lot. Low pressure eats gas and grip so top ‘em off, rotate ‘em if they’re due, and don’t forget to check your spare. You do have a spare, right?

3. Battery

Hot weather cooks weak batteries like eggs on a tailgate. If yours is pushing three years or more, swing by an auto shop and get it tested. It’s free. Beats callin' a tow truck from the middle of Nowheresville.

4. Headlights

Foggy headlights? Burnt-out bulbs? Fix that mess. A clean lens and working lights ain’t just about visibility – it’s about not becoming a hood ornament on some semi’s grill.

5. Emergency Kit

You don’t need to pack for Armageddon, but toss in the basics: jumper cables, a solid flashlight (STKR makes a few that’ll get the job done), water, first aid, and a multitool. Bonus if you toss in a roll of duct tape – because duct tape fixes damn near everything.

6. Know Where to Pull Over

Even if you’re running GPS, it pays to know where the next gas stop, grub shack, or stretch-your-legs spot is. Planning ahead beats white-knuckling it on E or dealing with hangry passengers. And if there’s a world’s-largest-anything on the map? Pull over. That’s the kind of weird roadside magic road trips are made for.

7. Clean Your Windshield

That film on the inside of your windshield? It’s like trying to drive through grandma’s glasses. Wipe it down. Your eyeballs will thank you.

8. Keep the Crew Fed, Charged, and Chill

Nothing nukes a road trip faster than low blood sugar and a dead phone. Load up on snacks… real ones, not just breath mints and melted gum. Toss in a few backup charging cables, maybe even a power bank, and you’ll keep the peace all the way to your campsite, grandma’s house, or wherever your tires take you.

Hit the Road Like You Mean It

A little prep now means more cruisin’ and less cussin’ later. So fire it up, point your grill toward adventure, and let that summer wind slap you in the face like a freedom-loving high five.

Got any road trip hacks we missed? Or a photo of your rig packed to the gills with STKR gear? Tag us. We love seein’ our crew out there doin’ it right.
